MALAYSIA (The Forth Series) Type 2

Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) announced in September 2016 that Malaysian banknotes bearing the signature of Governor Tan Sri Muhammad bin Ibrahim is circulated in stages starting with the first batch of RM50 banknotes.

Tan Sri Muhammad bin Ibrahim is the 8th Governor of BNM. He assumed the office of Governor on 1 May 2016, succeeding Dr. Zeti Akhtar Aziz.  He tendered his resignation  on 6 June 2018.

Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur 98' XVI Commonwealth Games - Commemorative Banknote

Bank Negara Malaysia in co-operation with Sukom Ninety Eight Berhad issued a new RM50 note to commemorate the Kuala Lumpur '98 XVI Commonwealth Games. This banknote was the first polymer banknote to be issued in Malaysia.

The design of the note portrays Malaysia as a world class sporting destination. The front features the portrait of the first Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the right and the Kuala Lumpur city skyline with prominent landmarks in the centre. The Look of the Commonwealth Games which features the stylised butterfly symbol and the gold-coloured Optical Variable Device (OVD) with the portrait of the first Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong in the clear window appears on the left. The logo of Bank Negara Malaysia appears in the other clear window on the right of the note. The Kuala Lumpur International Airport is featured as the central backdrop. To the right, the background design shows the artist's impression of the Multimedia Super Corridor connecting Kuala Lumpur City Centre to Putrajaya, Cyberjaya and the new Kuala Lumpur International Airport. 

The design on the back of the note shows the Bukit Jalil National Stadium in the centre. The logo of the Kuala Lumpur '98 XVI Commonwealth Games appears on the left of the note.

Malaysia. 60th Anniversary of the Signing of the Federation of Malaya Independence Agreement and His Majesty’s installation as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong - Commemorative Banknote

Bank Negara Malaysia is issuing commemorative banknotes in conjunction with the 60th Anniversary of the Signing of the Federation of Malaya Independence Agreement. These commemorative banknotes were launched by His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong XV Sultan Muhammad V at the Museum and Art Gallery, Sasana Kijang, Bank Negara Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur.

These banknotes commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Federation of Malaya Independence Agreement signing in the year 1957. The commemorative banknotes honour the Council (later called Conference) of Rulers’ contribution towards the realisation of the Nation’s independence on 31 August 1957. The Agreement dated 5 August 1957 proclaiming the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as the Supreme Head of the Federation was signed by the Malay Council of Rulers from Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Selangor and Terengganu with Sir Donald MacGillivray, the High Commissioner of the Federation of Malaya who represented Queen Elizabeth II. MALAYSIA (The Forth Series) Type 1

Bank Negara Malaysia has announced that the new Malaysian banknotes series will be introduced into circulation from 16 July 2012, replacing the current series that has been in circulation for over ten years. Themed ‘Distinctively Malaysia’, the banknotes feature intricate illustrations of the nation’s culture and traditions.

In this series, the RM2 banknote was no longer issued, while a new RM20 banknote was included in the line-up. This new series of banknote will co-circulate with the existing banknotes which remain as legal tender.

Signature of the 7th Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia Tan Sri Dato Ungku Dr.Zeti Akhtar Binti Ungku Abdul Aziz (May 2000 – 2016).

The smaller denominations of banknotes (RM 1, RM 5) are more commonly used in day-to-day transactions and printed on polymer to increase their level of durability. The larger denominations remain printed on paper.

MALAYSIA RM50 (Fourth series) - July 2009

This RM50 banknote is the first denomination to be redesigned as part of the fourth Series of Malaysian currency notes, which will replace the existing series in stages.

MALAYSIA (The Third Series) - Type 4

Malaysia third series banknotes were introduce stage by stage in the spirit of Wawasan 2020 that reflects the country’s rapid economic development and achievements.

The denominations were issued as follows:
-5 February 1996, RM2 - Malaysia modern telecommunications.
-29 September 1997, RM10 - Malaysia modern transportations.
-20 July 1998, RM50 - Oil drilling platform.
-27 September 1999, RM5 - Malaysia modern building.
-26 October 1998, RM100 - Automotive Malaysia

-8 November 2000, RM1 -Malaysia heritage and culture .

At the earlier stage, RM1 note was not introduced because BNM intention to have RM1 circulation coin to replace the role of RM1 note. However, this plan was reviewed mainly due to comment on the RM1 coin which apparently to be to heavy or messy to be carried around for daily usage.  Source here n here

The Type 4 of the third series was introduced in 2000 with the new governor signature. Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr. Zeti Akhtar Aziz took over the position left by Tan Sri Dato' Seri Ali Abul Hassan. This series of note has been circulated until to date.

MALAYSIA (The Third Series) Type 2

On 5 February 1996, Bank Negara Malaysia introduced the RM2 banknote, which was the first denomination of a new Malaysian banknote to be designed with the Vision 2020 theme. Depictions of the country’s rapid economic development and achievements were introduced for the first time in the banknotes of this series.

The Type 2 of the third series was introduced in early 1999 which inherit the Type 1 design but with the new governor, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Ali Abul Hassan. The position of the governor signature of this Type 2 note still remain on the same.

From 1 May 1994, banknotes for denominations of $5, $10, $50, $100, $500 and $1,000 were signed by Tan Sri Dato’ Ahmad Mohd. Don. The features and designs of these banknotes are the same as those of previous issues.

The $500 and $1,000 banknotes were demonetised effective 1 July 1999.

In 1993, the currency symbol “RM” was introduced to replaced the used of  the dollar sign “$”.

MALAYSIA (The Second Series) - 1986

In January 1986, Bank Negara Malaysia introduced new designs with additional security features for banknotes. Banknotes of this series were signed by Tan Sri Dato’ Jaffar bin Hussein (1985-1994).

From 1 January 1993, the one Ringgit banknote ceased to be produced. Those that were in circulation remained legal tender and were continued along with the one Ringgit coins until they finally exited from circulation. Until 2010 the second series notes are still occasionally encountered.

MALAYSIA (The First Series)

Bank Negara Malaysia began issuing currency notes in June 1967. These banknotes were in five denominations: $1, $5, $10, $50 and $100. A $1,000 denomination note was issued on 2 September 1968. 

The basic design of these banknotes was common across all denominations. The obverse depicted a portrait of His Majesty the first King, together with the words `Bank Negara Malaysia’. The words `legal tender’, the face value and the signature of Tun Ismail bin Mohamed Ali, the first Malaysian appointed as the Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia, appeared on the obverse of these banknotes. The reverse had the Bank Negara Malaysia logo, with a background of geometrical designs. The banknotes’ security features included a tiger’s head watermark on the left and a security thread on the right.  Source: BNM
